If you’re new here, you’re in for a treat! I freaking love stories. IG captions don’t quite allow me to share with you all the beautiful details that go into my couples and our time together.
The Blog is the place to learn more about real love stories, real wedding days, and be inspired for your own wedding.
As a documentary wedding photographer in Central Illinois, some of my favorite images from a wedding day are not your typical wedding photos. On a wedding day, there are two major categories of moments that are documented. These moments are the large moments, the moments that everyone sees, your ceremony, your portraits, your first dance, and then there are the moments that happen in between the large ones.
The in-between moments are the moments that I live for as a documentary wedding photographer. The natural moments that happen between you and your loved ones. The moments you might not experience on your actual wedding day but instead get to witness for the first time through photos. These are the moments that you’ll look back on and laugh about because your loved ones truly showed their true selves on your wedding day. These are the photos that will bring you to make you feel the emotions you felt on your wedding day time and time again.
I’m hoping to create a series of these blog posts and give you a glimpse at what I look for as a documentary wedding photographer. The in-between moments that I love to document and experience firsthand on a wedding day. Some of these are moments I look for on every wedding day, others are moments that I am privileged to witness only once in my career. Regardless of the moment, every single one is completely unique to the wedding day it takes place.
Some of the most intimate parts of the wedding day are the small interactions that happen between guests and couples. The warm embrace of mothers seeing one another for the first time in the getting-ready room. A side hug after a heartfelt speech, or the tight embrace of friends who haven’t seen one another in months. Here are some of my favorite almost unnoticed hugs from a wedding day.
While some might run away from chaos, I tend to run toward it as a documentary wedding photographer. When shooting a wedding in Colorado last year, Dad helps David deal with a bloody nose in the Colorado mountains. David lays back on a table with a rag on his face to avoid getting blood all over his formal attire. Altitude nose bleeds are no joke.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I always take a minute to watch children do their thing on wedding days. Children are some of the most unfiltered beings in front of a camera, which is why I always make sure to take a moment to document them. I love watching them explore, celebrate and have the best time on a wedding day interacting with all of the other family members.
One of the most important parts of my job as a wedding photographer is to ensure that you and your lover are comfortable enough with me to be your true selves in front of the camera. Moments like these, the pure excitement on James’ face OBSESSING over his wedding cake is what I live for when documenting your day. The emotions you feel looking back at his excitement, maybe your taste buds will even remember the flavor of the cake a little bit longer knowing that you loved it SO much.
These are the moments that I LIVE for as a documentary wedding photographer, and these are some of the blips of stories that I have had the pleasure to tell through photos.
