I love stories. IG captions don’t quite allow me to share with you all the beautiful details that go into my couples and our time together.
The Blog is the place to learn more about real love stories, real wedding days, and be inspired for your own wedding.
If you know me then you know that I LOVE the non-traditional when it comes to my sessions, which is why I’m SO excited to share Cayti and Chris’ couples session in downtown Springfield! This session is special for a couple of reasons, one being the creative energy that both Cayti and Chris brought to the table. With Cayti being a local photographer, and Chris being a video producer for Storyteller Studios, we were able to crank the creativity and collaboration of their session up a few notches! The other factor that made this session about as non-traditional as you can get is the interesting weather we got to work with, which we’ll talk more about later! So without further ado, let’s dive into Cayti and Chris’ session!
Prior to their couples session in downtown Springfield, I hadn’t actually met Cayti or Chris even though we all live and work in the Springfield area! Cayti and I had been internet acquaintances for a while, but had yet to ever meet in person. Their session was the perfect way to change this though, as it was their first time getting professional photos taken in over 5 years! The last time they had professional photos done was ALL the way back at their wedding. Safe to say they were due for some updated ones!
When it comes to photo locations, Springfield has NO shortage when it comes to options. This is something I’ve talked about at length in a past article of mine, and Cayti, Chris, and I were able to make use of some of my favorite locations throughout the city during their session. This included the Old State Capitol Building, the Old State Capitol Plaza, the Broadwell Building, the Illinois State Capitol Building, and finally a cute little bus stop shelter on 2nd street. All of these locations were within walking distance from each other. This meant that not only did we have a TON of variety to work with, but it was incredibly simple getting from one to the other, which was great considering the weather…
Alright, so I’ve alluded to this weather all article now, so what’s the big deal? It’s just a bit of rain right? Not exactly! My initial vision for Cayti and Chris’ couples session in downtown Springfield was a romantic romp in the evening fog. Unfortunately for us that evening fog was actually a bone chilling January rain, so not exactly the most ideal setting for photos. We were determined to make the session work though, and by the end of it all three of us were glad that we did! This session turned out to be one of my favorites I’ve documented, and the weather really forced us to get creative in the best way. Whether it’s the clear umbrellas I initially brought as props that turned out to be a necessity, or Chris having the brilliant idea on the fly to use the bus shelter for cover!
While a session in the rain may not be the ideal choice for everyone, Cayti and Chris’ session is proof that it can be worth it to tough out the weather for some spectacular photos! I’m so glad Cayti and Chris were down to make these photos happen, and I hope to experience a session like this again sometime. Although hopefully it’ll be a tad warmer for the next one!
